5 The PLO was often at pains to point out that the ratio of forces – ‘three tanks to one stone’ – gave a very misleading impression of the situation. In purely military terms the organization was, of course, no match for the Israeli military machine. However, once other aspects of the confrontation are taken into account the Israeli advantage is seen to be a spurious one. The most important of these factors is the fierce determination of the PLO rank and file. Their staunch belief and firm resolve prompted the leaders of the organization to turn to their Arab counterparts and implore them not to be frightened of the enemy.
The roles, however, had been reversed. With the biggest army in the Middle East, the Jews were no longer the underdogs – the Palestinians had taken their place. The PLO complained about the extent to which the Israeli leaders used the Holocaust to mobilize support for the Zionist cause both at home and abroad. 14 It repeatedly castigated Israeli leaders for engaging in Nazi oppression and adopting SS tactics. In certain instances the PLO took this analogy a step further. They viewed the entire history of the State of Israel through the lens of the Holocaust.
It also led to an extensive curfew over the central sector of the country as the security forces searched for any members of the force who may have escaped during the hostilities. Previous terrorist incidents invariably led to a retaliatory response of one kind or another. On this particular occasion, however, the Israeli reaction was much more extreme than usual. Three days after the attack the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) began the Litani Operation. An army of 25,000 troops invaded South Lebanon in an attempt to destroy TERRORISM 27 the PLO presence there.
